Coronation Cup Preview For This Sunday
This year’s edition of the 1600m G1 Coronation Cup (Race 6) does lack the depth of previous lineups for this time honored classic however, it has developed into an open contest with numerous winning chances.

Nine of the twelve runners contested the Sports Toto Supreme Challenge Cup in KL a fortnight ago where the Simon Dunderdale trained GOOD FIGHT (4) was successful. The minor placegetters in that feature were STREETS OF FIRE (1) and XENA (3), the only mares engaged in the group one contest this Sunday. STREETS OF FIRE (1) has only placed up to the mile previously but she does boast an excellent third up record (4:3-1-0) and can go close despite carrying top weight. XENA (3) has recaptured her best form at the right time and has been prepared to the minute in her search for group success. The 7yo displayed her familiar burst of acceleration in those recent victories and with track experience on her side, she should be hard to beat.

SINCERELY (6) hasn’t been far away in group ones this year and is proven over the journey. GOOD FIGHT (4) looked impressive when taking out the Sports Toto feature but he goes up 3.5kg from the win and a failed attempt at the mile previously, there may be question marks lingering over his chances. But based on his local record, it is hard to leave him out of calculations. BERRY BLISS (2) had no luck after copping midrace interference last start and the Penang Sprint Trophy winner can bounce back without surprising.

CHINA CAPTAIN (7), one of two locally trained runners, will be backing up from his 1600m victory last Sunday when making his debut for the Kevin Coetzee yard. Despite his two failures against group one company previously, his chances will be enhanced if a wet track prevails and jockey S Ruzaini has elected to ride the gelding. The other Ipoh trained performer, TEOCHEW KID (10) will face his toughest test but enters Sunday’s feature in career best form and looks an outside chance with 53kg. The 7yo does possess a sharp burst of acceleration and has indicated the mile trip will suit.

Talented sprinter, GAMESTONKS (1) appears ideally placed for a return to winning form in the 1400m Mitavite Asia 25th Anniversary Cup (Race 4). Rated twenty points higher than his nearest rival, GAMESTONKS (1) should add to his already impressive tally of 7 wins and 3 minor placings from 10 starts as he looks set to dictate the pace from barrier two. STRONG N BEST (4) has not disgraced in three Malaysian starts and will break through for a local win soon. The 7yo has been freshened since finishing runner up behind Coronation Cup aspirant Teochew Kid. GOLDEN KING (6) has performed admirably in a couple of group one contests this season and was a winner over this track and distance back in March. Former Kiwi galloper, ANSU (7) looks to be a horse on the way up and although he was a beaten favourite last start, the 5yo emanates from an inform stable and shouldn’t be taken lightly.
